about
There is a live performance of “Here Come The Flood” by Peter Gabriel on YouTube that I have watched probably a hundred times over the years.
He’s still young and skinny, dressed in a boxy grey suit, with a black dress shirt collar so wide it rivals any sunflower.
He plays the song alone; an electric grand piano and a bone dry vocal.
This unvarnished sound was the sonic inspiration for how I present my performance here.
My musical confidence has been returning these past few months. As a result, it seems I am becoming less interested in making the things smooth and beautiful; I want to leave the bark on the wood.
I’d like the songs to be genuine, to invite communion, to welcome you.
So hello,
I’m glad you’re here.
Hello,
I am astonishingly flawed
Hello, yes, hello
Running alongside,
I am divine perfection.
Here, in Lost Cities, the focus is centred on discomfort, missteps and shortcomings, warbles and bends- it’s beauty too.
lyrics
Lost Cities
Proud you stand
Brave new lungs exhaling stain
When we say goodbye
No one sees what it paints inside
Wet streets, spiralling leaves
Garbage, debris
Rainbow mirror, gasoline
For old to be new
Things fall apart, that’s beauty too
I may forget the words that you have said to me
Even now I feel your hands disappearing
When all I wanted was to be free, I couldn’t cut you out of me
And now that I’m in need, I’m fumbling
Through lost cities.
Sounds marched out
Like wind up toys deployed from my mouth
We grow, at least we try
And if change is constant, we’re in constant goodbye
When something's at it’s end there are no words to say
Look it in the eyes before it’s washed away
Appreciate the grief, when it owns everything
In a way it was the closest that we’d ever been
And now that I'm in need I'm fumbling
Through our lost cities.
