about

“Softer” - Recorded live & alone, just for you.

"Softer" falls into the category of what I call “the advice song”. William Prince and Jason Isbel are fantastic at them, Brian Fallon has a more than a few beauties of this kind, and Lori Mckena’s Humble and Kind may be the clearest example of this style:

“Go to church cause your mama says to/
Visit Grandpa every chance that you can/
It won’t be wasted time/
Always stay humble and kind”.

I absolutely love an advice song. I turn to them frequently, as one would a parent or mentor.

I wrote "Softer" in 2019, maybe? I don’t remember.

I forgot about it until I needed it; then it came back to my fingers. It felt like some wiser version of myself looping back around.

It helped.

Me, at least, and maybe that alone makes it worth it.

Though, like Guy Clark sang “The funny thing about good advice/ Is everybody’s got some”.

So listen with a grain of salt.

What do I know?

lyrics

Softer

try
not to
hide
or lie
behind
everything
gets softer
with time

try
not to
wait
or move in
gates
or make this a
song the angels sang

it was beautiful
in ugly rot
it was here before
and now it’s not.

try
to lose
the fight
to not forget
every sentence,
they won’t hold anyway

and when
it’s all slid down
your minds background
You won’t remember
what you couldn’t forget

it was beautiful
in ugly rot.
it was here before
and now it’s not.

if I see you,
I see you
if I don’t, I don’t
not sure it matters much,
the ways we go

everything
everything
everything
everything

comes
right
in
time
